Victor Dey Jr., a Ghanaian-born musician, embarked on his musical journey at a young age. Growing up in the UK, Algeria, and later in Ghana, he initially studied classical music before discovering jazz during his student years.
After earning his Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and English at the University of Ghana, Victor decided to pursue a professional musical career. He immersed himself in jazz studies, learning from various sources and teachers, including a stint at the Berklee College of Music in the USA in 2006. His talent and dedication were recognized when he was awarded the prestigious title of “Musician of the Year” at the Vodafone Music Awards in Ghana in 2014.
Since then, Victor has taken his music to various countries, performing in Belgium, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Liberia, Sierra Leone, the Netherlands, Qatar, São Tomé, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States. His performances have captivated audiences across the globe, showcasing his remarkable skills and musical versatility.
Victor has performed with renowned artists like Stevie Wonder, Mike Philips, Courtney Pine, Hugh Masakela, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Ebo Taylor, Guy “Ghanaba” Warren, Native Vibe, NHP, Eddie Grey, Nicolas Genest, Sean Nowell, Marcus Wyatt, Mihi Matsingana, Pilani Bubu, Godwin Louis, Etienne Charles, Derrick Gardner, Rob Dixon, Bruce Harris, Charles Goold, Chris Lewis, Étienne Charles, Thomas Dobler, Laura Prince, Jeff Kashiwa, Steve Kirby, Kweku Sumbry, Jen Staves, Andy Narell, and Barry Finnerty.
Victor leads his own jazz quartet (The Ghana Jazz Collective), which performs regularly in Ghana and internationally. Their home base is the +233 Jazz Bar & Grill in Accra, Ghana. His debut album, “Makola,” featuring exclusively original music, was released in July 2017.
Victor’s music combines traditional Ghanaian rhythms with modern jazz, creating a unique and exciting sound. His distinctive style was recognized by CNN, which featured him in the program African Voices in August 2016.
Currently based in New York City, Victor is working on fresh material for his second album, which is expected to be released soon.
